With cold days and nights upon us we are working on protecting our container plants from the cold winter temperatures and winds on the ridge. These natives are hardy and adapted to the cold wet winters on the Palouse, but container plants are at a disadvantage without the ground to help protect their roots. ![]() In order to provide some insulation for our plants we grouped our tubes, pots, and gallon containers in a railroad tie enclosure. ![]() After organizing these plants we will then fill in the spaces with sand. The plants will insulate each other and the sand will protect them on the exposed sides. By taking these extra precautions we are sure to see good survivability and lots of healthy plants greening up in the spring. ![]() In addition, a nice blanket of snow this winter would be ideal for providing a little moisture and extra insulation to these plants during the coldest months. So, think snow! |
