It is the first day of June and it is finally feeling like May. Between rain showers of the past few weeks, we have been planting seedlings of Sticky Purple Geranium, Silky Lupine, Showy Phlox and Western Hawkweed (aka Hairy Al) into our 1 acre seed-increase plot. The cool weather and rain provided by Mother Nature gave these new seedlings a great head start. Anne Veseth, a recent MHS student and 2nd year veteran on Thorn Creek Native Seed Farm, is planting Western Hawkweed ( Hieracium albertinum) in the picture below. ![]() This past week we gave tours to our wholesale seed customers and participants of presentions I do throughout the year on "Sustainable landscaping with Palouse Native Plants". Everyone was prepared for the wet, cool weather and welling to face the elements. By the end of our raining week we had to cancel one tour due to the muddy conditions with concerns for damage to the prairie. Plants of the Wild, a seed customer of ours, toured in the rain with scattered sun showers. These tours provide us with the opportunity to learn about each others operations and discuss our common goals and objectives. Several of our seed customers are native plant nurseries. They purchase our seed plant them into pots for the retail market. Plants of the Wild from Tekeo, Washington will have plants grown from our seed available in the fall. Pleasant Hill Farm of Troy, ID has plants from our seed available at Spring Valley Nursery and Garden Center in Troy, Idaho. Remember to request plants grown from seed produced at Thorn Creek Native Seed Farm at your local nurseries! |
